Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. However, she was only in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path was difficult to take. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs came her way. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
